Pedro Almodóvar's new film, "Volver" -- which was nominated for the Palme d'Or and took the prize for best screenplay and best actress (ensemble) at Cannes -- is making a splash at the New York Film Festival and shaping up to be an Oscar favorite for best foreign film (read Stephanie Zacharek's review here). Salon film critic Andrew O'Hehir took part in an interview with Almodóvar in Cannes, where the director talked about the process of working with Penélope Cruz on the film and how she briefly reawakened his heterosexual desire.(Click here to listen.)

Is Penélope your great canvas now, your muse?

This is a confession -- don't tell anyone. You know that I am gay. In another part of my life -- when I was younger -- I have had bisexual [experiences]. The last time that I made love to a woman was 22 years ago.

With Penélope, I felt physical desire again. I was very horny with her.
