Andrea Savage's TV mom roles weren't funny, so she wrote her own show

Before creator and star Andrea Savage developed truTV's "I'm Sorry," she was growing tired of the television mom roles she was getting pitched. "Either the mom was a super harried mom, who was like, 'My husband, ugh, he's like my child,' or, the mom is like, 'I hate my kids, I don't care, roll over into a ditch,'" Savage shared on "Salon Talks."

Many of the hilarious and raunchy stories on Savage's "I'm Sorry" have at least a kernel of Savage's own experiences as a mom, and she plays Andrea, a fictionalized version of herself. Using her improv comedy background, she takes real "teachable moments" and pushes them to the extreme to make the storylines flow for the show. "I wanted to do something where I could tell funny stories that I had in my life, and use real characters for my life," Savage said."

In the video above, Savage describes how she was inspired by shows like "Curb Your Enthusiasm," "You're the Worst," and "Master of None," although she notes that her comedy is one of the few led by a female comedian, similar to Pamela Adlon's "Better Things."

"I'm Sorry," begins its second season on January 9. Watch Salon's full episode with Savage to hear more about hiring women on "I'm Sorry" and her experiences working with Julia Louis-Dreyfus on "Veep."
