A clutter-free life starts with these simple habits says bestselling author Gretchen Rubin

The expert on happiness knows exactly what you can do to declutter your life and finally get organized. Gretchen Rubin, author of the New York Times bestseller "The Happiness Project," offers practical organizing tips in her new book "Outer Order, Inner Calm: Declutter and Organize to Make More Room for Happiness." Rubin joined Salon's Mary Elizabeth Williams to explain how even just spending one minute cleaning up can add up to good lifelong habits.

Rubin is talking about the simple tasks, like hanging up your coat, filing an important document in a designated folder, or opening and organizing your mail. "You're creating order and then you're also maintaining order, so before too long, it really does start to make a difference," Rubin said.

The author intends for these tips to be practical and attainable, instead of uprooting your entire life. She explained, "This is something that you can do without any extra time or energy, it's literally just as you're walking through your day."

Watch the video above to learn more about how a one minute timer can keep your life organized. And watch the full episode to learn how Rubin is not expecting everyone to stay organized just like her, but rather embracing different approaches of decluttering.
