President Donald Trump paid tribute to American prisoners of war on Tuesday, tweeting, “On National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day, we honor the Americans captured and imprisoned by foreign powers while carrying out their duties to defend this great nation.” But Meghan McCain, daughter of the late POW and Arizona Sen. John McCain, questioned Trump’s sincerity—angrily posting, “No one believes you care about prisoners of war and ‘people who get captured.’”
Meghan McCain, an anti-Trump conservative and co-host on ABC’s “The View,” still resents the president for comments he made during the 2016 presidential race that belittled her father and his record of military service. Commenting on John McCain’s time as a POW in Vietnam, Trump insisted that he was “not a war hero” and asserted, “I like people who weren’t captured.”
Trump, now 72, managed to avoid military service during the Vietnam War—whereas John McCain was captured by the communist Viet Cong and tortured during his captivity. The Arizona Republican was 81 when he died of brain cancer on August 25, 2018.
As a co-host of “The View,” the 34-year-old Meghan McCain (a right-wing Republican) has gotten into many heated debates with her more liberal co-hosts—especially 76-year-old native New Yorker Joy Behar, who she obviously doesn’t get along with. But despite their political differences, McCain and Behar have a mutual disdain for Trump.
