One of the GOP senators Democrats are hoping to unseat in 2020 is Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, and Sara Gideon (speaker of Maine’s House of Representatives) has announced that she will be running in Maine’s Democratic senatorial primary.
Collins is a major target of Democrats in light of her vote in favor of confirming Justice Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court in 2018. In the past, Collins had a reputation for being an independently minded Republican who was not afraid to buck her party at times. But Gideon, in her video, stressed that Collins has been acting like a party-line Republican during the Trump era.
“Susan Collins has been in the Senate for 22 years,” Gideon said in a video, “and at one point, maybe she was different than some of the other folks in Washington. But she doesn’t seem that way anymore.”
During the Senate confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh in 2019, some of Kavanaugh’s opponents warned that if she voted for his confirmation, they would crowdfund a hypothetical Democratic opponent. And so far, millions of dollars have been raised.
Collins is also being challenged from the right: Derek Levasseur, a far-right blogger, is running against Collins in the GOP senatorial primary in Maine and is hoping to prevent her from making it to the general election.
