OPEN POSITIONS

Site Moderator for Open Salon and Salon.com

With an audience of 12 million monthly unique visitors, Salon.com covers breaking news, politics, culture, technology and entertainment through investigative reporting, fearless commentary and criticism, and provocative personal essays. Salon.com has been a leader in online media since the dawn of the digital age and has bureaus in San Francisco and New York. Its award-winning staff of writers includes prominent political columnists Joan Walsh, Steve Kornacki (co-host of MSNBC’s “The Cycle”) and Alex Pareene, as well as cultural critics Andrew O’Hehir, Laura Miller and Mary Elizabeth Williams.

In addition to more traditional News, Politics, Entertainment and Life pages, Salon.com also features a hybrid social networking and blogging site called Open Salon (open.salon.com). Open offers devoted readers of the website the opportunity to write their own essays and stories, which are then compiled into a daily publication. The strongest pieces are shepherded to the website proper, where they’re typically featured in our Life section and homepage.

Both Salon.com and Open Salon encourage robust discussion, the latter site giving its users the chance not only to comment on fellow bloggers’ posts but to rate them as well. Because our readership is so passionate, however, this discourse can occasionally veer off track. This is where you come in.

Salon.com is looking for a moderator to make sure our reader responses remain healthy and germane. Primary responsibilities include deleting spam content that appears across the two sites and monitoring the comment sections for overtly inappropriate material — hate speech targeting a specific group, needlessly provocative responses (good old-fashioned trolling), advertising for third-party sites, copyrighted materials and all other manner of spam.

The moderator will work hand in hand with our editorial staff, namely the editor of Open Salon, as well as more technical project managers from our production team. Candidates should possess excellent communication skills, patience for our thoughtful, demanding and (very occasionally) cranky readership, as well as a healthy interest in the content both sites produce.

Because our publications live online, our moderator will be able to work via remote access from a location of his or her choosing. Applicants should submit their resumes to moderator@salon.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Editorial Internships @ Salon

Interns are an important part of Salon’s daily editorial operations. They work closely with Salon staff to research, report, write and produce our news and culture coverage. They also take part in editorial meetings and otherwise learn about the day-to-day workings of an award-winning online news and entertainment site. Many Salon interns have gone on to jobs in the media, including Rolling Stone, the New York Times, Elle, CNN and, of course, Salon.

Tell us why you want to intern with Salon! Please specify in the subject line whether you are applying for a News or Culture internship. We require a time commitment of at least 20 hours per week, over at least 3 days. It is possible to do the internship for college credit. Some professional experience is required.

Please do not contact individual editors. No phone calls, please.
