Trayvon Martin’s parents Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin call out America’s "ugly truth": racism
Six years after Trayvon Martin’s death, his mother and father, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, are part of a new six-part documentary series executive produced by Jay-Z, “Rest in Power: The Trayvon Martin Story,” which premieres on BET and the Paramount Network July 30 at 10 p.m. ET. The parents open up on “Salon Talks” about their 17-year-old son’s untimely death and how his case sparked the beginning of a national activist movement and thrust them into the spotlight as advocates for families affected by gun violence. "Once we set out on this mission to get justice for our son, we took a vow to stand in the gap for those who need us to be there for them,” Tracy Martin told SalonTV’s D. Watkins.
While they admit that every day is still tough and hard to deal with, Fulton and Martin have embraced their reality and created a foundation, the Trayvon Martin Foundation, in their son’s name to help mothers and fathers who have lost a child to senseless killings move onto the next step in their lives. "For the people who can't speak up for themselves, or don't have the opportunity to speak up for themselves, we represent those families,” Fulton said. “We represent all the ones who you have not said their names.”The family also spoke out about the deep racial divisions in America, visible and supported by President Trump. Racism, Fulton says, is “alive and well in the United States.” Watch the interview above to hear more from Trayvon Martin’s parents on how they are working to change Stand Your Ground laws and advocating on behalf of families. Watkins’ full interview with the directors of the “Rest in Power” docu-series, Jenner Furst and Julia Willoughby Nason to hear more about how they crafted the series and wove in new details about George Zimmerman’s story.
