Although states like California have passed laws protecting undocumented workers from discrimination and requiring employers to give prior notice about immigration raids, these laws are useless against the federal government.
Carney Shegerian, a workplace attorney in California, joined "Salon Now" to talk about the more than 100 7-Eleven stores that were raided by ICE agents in early January and what the continued use of this tactic by the Trump administration will mean for the estimated one in 10 workers in California who are undocumented. "Often what's going to happen is they're going to lose that job, they're going to have to move from that area, and they're gonna have to start whole new lives if they're lucky enough to stay," Shegarian said.
